The development of the aerospace discipline at Tsinghua University can be traced back to the 1930s, when the Institute of Aeronautics was established under the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 1938, the Department of Aeronautics was founded, which cultivated a large number of outstanding talents and made significant contributions to the establishment of China's aerospace discipline and the development of aerospace technology. In the early 1950s, during the adjustment of university departments nationwide, the Department of Aeronautics was relocated from Tsinghua University to participate in the establishment of Beijing Aviation Institute according to the national unified arrangement. In the late 1950s, to develop national defense high technology represented by the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" project, Tsinghua University successively established the Departments of Engineering Mechanics and Mathematics and Automatic Control to carry out related scientific research and talent training. After the reform and opening up, with the support of relevant departments, Tsinghua University set up the Aerospace Fund to encourage faculty to conduct research in the aerospace field.
Helping scientific research achieve new breakthroughs!
Since the 1990s, in the process of building a world-class university, based on the strategic needs of national development and the trends of global scientific and technological progress, Tsinghua University clearly proposed the goal of actively participating in national defense research and developing aerospace disciplines. Seizing the excellent opportunity of the "985 Project," the university made intensive investments in this field during the first phase of the "985" construction. In 1998, the university established the interdisciplinary Space Technology Research Center. The "Aerospace Tsinghua No.1" microsatellite and "Naxing No.1" were successfully launched in 2000 and 2004, respectively.
